In a trail blazing decision, DLF tied up with the Women's Golf Association of India to be sponsors of the Women's Professional Golf Tour and the Women's Indian Open for a period of 3 years. DLF wants to support and nourish the vast talent in Womens Golf in India. The decision is a dream come true for several players and sportswomen who can now earn a lively hood from Professional Golf, which has been limited to the teaching arena -stating this- the Secretary General of the association, Champika Sayal former chairperson of the Indian Golf Union Ladies Section, reiterated that the "younger generation of amateur golfers will now be able to play the game with a completely new perspective and can look forward to making a career by playing in tours in their homeland and internationally". In the Asian region, careers in golf are considered to be very respectable and sportswomen from different disciplines in many countries make a livelihood from the game. The tour will be for women above the age of 18 years. Sportswomen from other disciplines can now avail training in the game to join the ranks of professional players in golf, as assistant professionals.

The Six leg DLF Women's Golf Tour in the launch year had its first event at the capital's Lado Sarai golf club from and the other 5 events are being held on India's most challenging golf courses in different cities, which include Pune, Gurgaon and Noida. The last event will be held in February 2007 at DLF Golf & Country Club and is scheduled from, 21st to 23rd February 2007. The Six leg tour will carry a prize purse of Rupees 9 lakhs (each event at Rupees One and a half lakhs). The DLF Women's Professional Golf tour is envisaged to grow larger and will attract players from the Asian region as well in the coming years..

The Women's Golf Association of India (Pro golf) launched women's professional golf in October 2005 with a "Skins game" played between USLPGA players and Indian Mrs Simi Mehra Guffin. The President of the United States Ladies Professional Golf Association made a valuable contribution along with Simi Mehra , by distributing hundreds of golf clubs and golf balls to children at the Army Golf Club.

With the upsurge of golf in the country, the efforts of the Women's Golf Association of India need to be lauded for having paved the way for the fairer sex to join the ranks of their male professional counterparts who have taken Indian golf to a new dimension.

The top four women players on the money list for the season 2006-07 will get exemption to play in the DLF Women's Indian Open. DLF Women's Indian Open is a special sanction event of the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) which is Asia's premier Golf Tour played in the maximum countries in the Asian region. The event is scheduled from 11th to 16th March 2007 and carries a prize purse of USD 1,00,000/-. DLF Women's Indian open will be played at the prestigious DLF Golf & country club, in Gurgaon.

It will be the endeavor of the WGAI to aim at making the DLF Women's Indian Open a co-sanction of the LET (Ladies European Tour) in the year 2008. Mrs Simi Mehra Guffin India's only international tour player and Chairperson of the players division of the WGAI will be the only player to get an exemption to play in DLF Women's Indian Open as she is in the top 30 positions of Ladies Asian Golf Tour. DLF will be the title sponsor for the Women's Indian open for a period of three years.

The DLF Women's Professional Golf tour is being held under the auspices of the Women's Golf Association of India along with the Indian Golf Union. The six leg tour is being marketed by Sports & Leisure Worldwide. "While the Men's Indian tour can comfortably boast of a tour even though it has been plagued by numerous problems the ladies have had no tour at all with or without problems!. The Women's Golf Association of India (WGAI) has made great strides in correcting this anomaly and is creating History by launching the Women's Professional Golf Tour." Till now the women golfers in India have had no platform which could turn their game into a profession." says Anil Dev MD Sports & Leisure Worldwide which has been signed up by WGAI as the promoters of the ladies Professional tour which would offer an excellent marketing platform for the sponsors which would ultimately benefit the players in terms of larger prize money and endorsements which have at present been out of reach of Professional Golfers in India.

The girls on the tour would provide the much needed glamour to the sport. It is a proven fact in the west that TRP's shoot-up when women's golf is broadcasted on TV. In India with the absence of serious entertainment programmes except the soaps and cookery shows women's golf on TV could culminate into a win win situation for the sponsors as well as the players and ultimately for the sport itself.

"The event calendar announcing the dates of the events has been firmed up" adds Ms.Shalini Tomar, Business head of SLW "we are working hard to line up sponsors to create opportunities for the professional players in India and would like the tour to start on a sound footing. "Our attempt would be to provide exposure to women's golf through the media and take it to a new dimension in India. Association with the ladies tour would not only offer unique branding opportunities to the companies but also a great brand fit to those dealing in "women's products".
